Income

The total income for the motor trade industry in 2015 was R600 332 million. The largest contributor to the total income was 'retail sales of motor vehicles' (R279 790 million or 46,6%), followed by 'retail sales of automotive fuel' (R177 086 million or 29,5%) and 'sales of new motor vehicle parts and accessories' (R58 485 million or 9,7%).

Expenditure

Expenditure in the motor trade industry in 2015 amounted to R587 884 million. The largest contributor to total expenditure was 'purchases' (R497 988 million or 84,7%), followed by 'salaries and wages' (R39 729 million or 6,8%).

Employment

The total number of persons employed in the motor trade industry at the end of June 2015 was 270 440. 'Retail sales of automotive fuel' employed the largest number of persons (87 633 or 32,4%), followed by 'retail sales of motor vehicles' (80 809 or 29,9%), and 'maintenance and repair of motor vehicles' (48 543 or 17,9%).

The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 28,0%. The industries with the highest proportion of females employed were 'retail sales of automotive fuel' (33,4%) and  'Retail sales of motor vehicles' (29,0%).
