Products

The total income from own manufactured products for the manufacturing industry in 2021 was R2 273,8 billion. The total income represents an increase of 1,6% per annum compared with the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2017 (R2 136,1 billion). Comparing 2017 and 2021, large increases were reported for ‘food and beverages (+R108,1 billion), ‘coke, petroleum products, chemical products, rubber and plastic products’ (+R27,8 billion) and ‘transport equipment’ (+R20,5 billion).

Between 2017 and 2021, food and beverages gained the biggest percentage share (+3,5 percentage points) in income from own manufactured products (from a percentage contribution of 20,1% in 2017 to 23,6% in 2021). ‘Metals, metal products, machinery and equipment’ lost the biggest percentage share (‑1,1 percentage points) over the same period (from 17,4% in 2017 to 16,3% in 2021).

 

Top 10 products

 The income of the top ten own manufactured products for the manufacturing industry in 2021 was R511,4 billion (a percentage share of 22,5%). Contrary to 2017, ‘medium passenger motor vehicles’ was the second largest product (R76,2 billion or 3,4%) and ‘light commercial vehicles’ was the third largest product (R74,6 billion or 3,3%) in 2021. ‘Diesel fuel, automotive’ maintained the position of being the largest product in both years (R80,2 billion or 3,8% in 2017 and R87,5 billion or 3,8% in 2021).
