Income

The total income for the manufacturing industry in 2011 was R1 678 236 million. The largest contributor to the total income was `coke, petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic` (R484 617 million or 29%), followed by `metals, metal products, machinery and equipment` (R336 606 million or 20%) and `food products and beverages` (R287 792 million or 17%).

Expenditure

Expenditure in the manufacturing industry in 2011 amounted to R1 581 463 million. The expenditure consisted primarily of purchases (R986 742 million or 62%), followed by salaries and wages (R185 164 million or 12%) and depreciation (R38 337 million or 2%).

Employment

The total number of persons employed in the manufacturing industry at the end of June 2011 was 1 304 589. `Metals, metal products, machinery and equipment` employed the largest number of persons (308 200 or 24%), followed by `food products and beverages` (226 842 or 17%) and `coke, petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic` (171 973 or 13%).

The proportion of females in the work force was 31%. The proportion of females by type of manufacturing ranged from 18% in `metals, metal products, machinery and equipment` to 64% in `textiles, clothing, leather and footwear`.
