Key findings: Report-03-51-02 - Tourism, 2023

The total number of foreign travellers who visited South Africa from Africa, overseas and unspecified countries, arriving through all ports of entry during 2023 was 11 655 083. The 2023 figure represents an increase of 45,2% as compared with the 2022 figure of 8 026 409. Foreign arrivals were made up of 352 845 non-visitors and 11 302 238 visitors. Visitors were made up of 2 818 905 same-day visitors and 8 483 333 tourists (overnight visitors). The breakdown of tourists by sex and age is as follows: 4 900 910 were males, 3 582 423 were females; 462 078 were less than 15 years, 703 771 were aged 15-24 years, 2 032 386 were aged 25-34 years, 2 516 479 were aged 35-44 years, 1 523 821 were aged 45-54 years, 779 658 were aged 55-64 years, 465 134 were aged 65+ years and six did not specify their age.
