This statistical release provides information on the sources and uses of cash of provincial government for the fiscal years 2011/2012 and 2012/2013, classified economically and functionally. The net change in the stock of cash from the provincial revenue funds and donor funds amounted to R6 555 million for the 2012/2013 fiscal year. The amount has increased from R6 438 million in 2011/2012.
       
1. Major Influences

The major contributors to the amount of R6 555  million of net change in the stock of cash of provincial government for the fiscal year 2012/2013 are the cash receipts from operating activities, R401 533 million, (2011/2012: R374 809 million); cash payments for operating activities, R365 241 million, (2011/2012: R339 375 million); purchases of non-financial assets, R29 859 million, (2011/2012: R29 070 million); and sales of non-financial assets, R122 million, (2011/2012: R74 million).

The largest contributor to the total cash payments for operating activities and purchases of non-financial assets (functionally classified) of R395 100 million from the provincial revenue funds and donor funds for the 2012/2013 fiscal year was education (R170 223 million, contributing 43,1%), followed by health (R119 233 million or 30,2%), total economic affairs (R42 357 million or 10,7%), total general public services (R19 509 million or 4,9%), housing and community amenities (R18 165 million or 4,6%), social protection (R12 281 million or 3,1%), recreation, culture and religion (R6 358 million or 1,6%), public order and safety (R4 237 million or 1,1%) and environmental protection (R2 737 million or 0,7%)
