The net change in the stock of cash from higher education institutions amounted to a cash surplus of R1 628 million for the 2016 financial year.

This statistical release provide information on the sources and uses of cash of higher education institutions for the financial years 2015 and 2016, classified economically and functionally. The net change in the stock of cash from higher education institutions amounted to R1 628 million for the 2016 financial year. The amount has increased from R731 million in 2015.

Major Influences

The major contributors to the cash amount of R1 628 million of the net change in the stock of cash of higher education institutions for the financial year 2016 are the cash receipts from operating activities, R67 366 million, (2015: R60 956 million); cash payments for operating activities, R58 952 million, (2015: R53 565 million); purchases of non-financial assets, R6 224 million, (2015: R6 267 million); sales of non-financial assets, R59 million, (2015: R704 million); net acquisition of financial assets other than cash, R1 541 million, (2015: R1 754 million); and net incurrence of liabilities, R920 million (2015: R658 million), (see Table A, p.4).
