This statistical release provides information on the sources and uses of cash of higher education institutions for the financial years 2008 and 2009, classified economically and functionally. The net change in the stock of cash from higher education institutions amounted to R972 million for the 2009 fiscal year. The amount has decreased from
R2 171 million in 2008.

Major Influences

The major contributors to the amount of R972 million of the net change in the stock of cash of higher education institutions for the financial year 2009 are the cash receipts from operating activities, R36 892 million, (2008: R32 742 million); cash payments for operating activities, R30 274 million, (2008: R26 386 million); purchases of
non-financial assets, R3 683 million, (2008: R3 012 million); sales of non-financial assets, R60 million, (2008: R28 million); net acquisition of financial assets other than cash, R2 209 million, (2008: R1 302 million); and net incurrence of liabilities,
R186 million (2008: R101 million), (see Table A, p.4).
