Freight transportation


Income from freight transportation decreased by 7,7% in the three months ended October 2020 compared with the three months ended October 2019. The main negative contributors to this decrease were:

  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (-22,5% and contributing -2,5 percentage points);
  • ‘other’ freight (-8,8% and contributing -1,6 percentage points); and
  • containers (-17,8% and contributing -1,0 percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 7,7% in the three months ended October 2020 compared with the previous three months. Road freight increased by 9,0% (contributing 6,8 percentage points) and rail freight increased by 3,5% (contributing 0,9 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 55,5% in October 2020 compared with October 2019. The corresponding income decreased by 45,5% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 30,1% in the three months ended October 2020 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys increased by 28,6% (contributing 28,3 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys increased by 153,8% (contributing 1,8 percentage points).
