Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 3,0% in May 2019 compared with May 2018. The corresponding income increased by 2,4% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 3,1% in the three months ended May 2019 compared with the three months ended May 2018. The main contributor to this increase was primary mining and quarrying products (14,2% and contributing 5,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload decreased by 0,3% in the three months ended May 2019 compared with the previous three months. Road freight decreased by 1,8% (contributing -1,4 percentage points) while rail freight increased by 4,9% (contributing 1,1 percentage points).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 5,7% in May 2019 compared with May 2018. The corresponding income increased by 18,0% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 9,9% in the three months ended May 2019 compared with the previous three months. Rail passenger journeys decreased by 18,7% (contributing -8,0 percentage points) and road passenger journeys decreased by 3,4% (contributing -1,9 percentage points).
