Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 3,6% in April 2019 compared with April 2018. The corresponding income increased by 4,1% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 2,5% in the three months ended April 2019 compared with the three months ended April 2018. The main contributor to this increase was primary mining and quarrying products (10,6% and contributing 3,9 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload decreased by 1,8% in the three months ended April 2019 compared with the previous three months. Road freight decreased by 2,7% (contributing -2,1 percentage points) while rail freight increased by 1,6% (contributing 0,3 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 21,5% in April 2019 compared with April 2018. The corresponding income increased by 4,6% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 13,4% in the three months ended April 2019 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys decreased by 14,1% (contributing -8,1 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys decreased by 12,3% (contributing -5,2 percentage points).
