Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 1,4% in March 2019 compared with March 2018. The corresponding income increased by 1,7% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 2,7% in the first quarter of 2019 compared with the first quarter of 2018. The main contributor to this increase was primary mining and quarrying products (10,3% and contributing 3,7 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload decreased by 2,2% in the first quarter of 2019 compared with the previous quarter. Road freight decreased by 4,3% (contributing -3,4 percentage points) while rail freight increased by 5,8% (contributing 1,2 percentage points).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 16,1% in March 2019 compared with March 2018. The corresponding income decreased by 4,0% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 11,1% in the first quarter of 2019 compared with the previous quarter. Road passenger journeys decreased by 11,9% (contributing -6,9 percentage points) while rail passenger journeys decreased by 10,0% (contributing -4,2 percentage points).
