Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) decreased by 2,5% in December 2023 compared with December 2022. The corresponding income increased by 3,0% over the same period.

 

Income from freight transportation increased by 4,3% in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared with the fourth quarter of 2022. The main positive contributors to this increase were:

·       primary mining and quarrying products (13,8% and contributing 4,4 percentage points); and

·        ‘other’ freight (9,6% and contributing 1,9 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 2,6% in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared with the third quarter of 2023. Road freight increased by 3,3% (contributing 2,7 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 1,0% (contributing -0,2 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys increased by 9,9% in December 2023 compared with December 2022. The corresponding income increased by 6,9% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 4,9% in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared with the third quarter of 2023. Road passenger journeys increased by 4,1% (contributing 3,5 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys increased by 9,8% (contributing 1,4 percentage points).
