Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 4,9% in March 2023 compared with March 2022. The corresponding income increased by 8,5% over the same period.

 

Income from freight transportation increased by 13,1% in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the first quarter of 2022. The main contributors to this increase were:

·        primary mining and quarrying products (13,0% and contributing 4,2 percentage points);

·        ‘other’ freight (19,3% and contributing 3,8 percentage points); and

·        manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (16,0% and contributing 2,0 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 0,2% in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the fourth quarter of 2022. Rail freight increased by 18,0% (contributing 2,3 percentage points) while road freight decreased by 2,4% (contributing -2,1 percentage points).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys increased by 14,1% in March 2023 compared with March 2022. The corresponding income increased by 16,6% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 0,5% in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the fourth quarter of 2022. Rail passenger journeys increased by 40,5% (contributing 3,6 percentage points) while road passenger journeys decreased by 3,4% (contributing -3,1 percentage points).
