Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 7,7% in February 2023 compared with February 2022. The corresponding income increased by 11,5% over the same period.

 

Income from freight transportation increased by 15,5% in the three months ended February 2023 compared with the three months ended February 2022. The main contributors to this increase were:

·        primary mining and quarrying products (13,4% and contributing 4,4 percentage points);

·        ‘other’ freight (21,1% and contributing 4,1 percentage points);

·        manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (18,2% and contributing 2,2 percentage points); and

·        agriculture and forestry primary products (24,2% and contributing 1,8 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 2,4% in the three months ended February 2023 compared with the previous three months. Rail freight increased by 15,4% (contributing 2,0 percentage points) and road freight increased by 0,5% (contributing 0,4 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys increased by 12,9% in February 2023 compared with February 2022. The corresponding income increased by 19,1% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 3,9% in the three months ended February 2023 compared with the previous three months. Rail passenger journeys increased by 60,6% (contributing 4,5 percentage points) while road passenger journeys decreased by 0,6% (contributing -0,6 of a percentage point).
