Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 17,2% in September 2022 compared with September 2021. The corresponding income increased by 22,1% over the same period.

 

Income from freight transportation increased by 26,4% in the third quarter of 2022 compared with the third quarter of 2021 The main positive contributors to this increase were:

·        primary mining and quarrying products (27,5% and contributing 9,2 percentage points);

·        ‘other’ freight (24,1% and contributing 4,8 percentage points);

·        manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (24,0% and contributing 2,9 percentage points); and

·        agriculture and forestry primary products (31,9% and contributing 2,5 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 6,8% in the third quarter of 2022 compared with the second quarter of 2022. Road freight increased by 8,2% (contributing 6,8 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 0,6% (contributing -0,1 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys increased by 5,0% in September 2022 compared with September 2021. The corresponding income increased by 22,4% over the same period. 

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 4,1% in the third quarter of 2022 compared with the second quarter of 2022. Road passenger journeys increased by 4,5% (contributing 4,2 percentage points) while rail passenger journeys decreased by 2,0% (contributing -0,1 of a percentage point).
