Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 23,3% in October 2022 compared with October 2021. The corresponding income increased by 18,5% over the same period.

 

Income from freight transportation increased by 21,7% in the three months ended October 2022 compared with the three months ended October 2021The main positive contributors to this increase were:

·        primary mining and quarrying products (20,7% and contributing 6,9 percentage points);

·        ‘other’ freight (22,7% and contributing 4,4 percentage points);

·        manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (23,9% and contributing 2,8 percentage points); and

·        agriculture and forestry primary products (32,1% and contributing 2,4 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 2,3% in the three months ended October 2022 compared with the previous three months. Road freight increased by 3,9% (contributing 3,3 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 6,3% (contributing -1,0 percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys increased by 9,6% in October 2022 compared with October 2021. The corresponding income increased by 20,7% over the same period. 

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 6,9% in the three months ended October 2022 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys increased by 5,7% (contributing 5,4 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys increased by 27,8% (contributing 1,5 percentage points).
