Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 4,6% in March 2022 compared with March 2021. The corresponding income increased by 6,6% over the same period.

 

Income from freight transportation increased by 10,2% in the first quarter of 2022 compared with the first quarter of 2021. The main positive contributors to this increase were:

·        ‘other’ freight (25,9% and contributing 5,3 percentage points); and

·        manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (14,0% and contributing 1,2 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 3,2% in the first quarter of 2022 compared with the fourth quarter of 2021. Road freight increased by 4,5% (contributing 3,6 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 2,3% (contributing -0,5 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 0,1% in March 2022 compared with March 2021. The corresponding income increased by 0,9% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 5,5% in the first quarter of 2022 compared with the fourth quarter of 2021. Road passenger journeys decreased by 4,3% (contributing -3,8 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys decreased by 15,1% (contributing -1,7 percentage points).
