Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 13,6% in January 2022 compared with January 2021. The corresponding income increased by 14,4% over the same period.

 

Income from freight transportation increased by 9,3% in the three months ended January 2022 compared with the three months ended January 2021. The main positive contributors to this increase were:

·        ‘other’ freight (22,7% and contributing 4,7 percentage points); and

·        manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (13,2% and contributing 1,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 3,4% in the three months ended January 2022 compared with the previous three months. Road freight increased by 4,4% (contributing 3,5 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 0,5% (contributing -0,1 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 18,2% in January 2022 compared with January 2021. The corresponding income decreased by 6,8% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 6,1% in the three months ended January 2022 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys decreased by 4,7% (contributing -4,1 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys decreased by 17,0% (contributing -2,0 percentage points).
