Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 3,7% in August 2021 compared with August 2020. The corresponding income increased by 3,7% over the same period.


Income from freight transportation increased by 5,1% in the three months ended August 2021 compared with the three months ended August 2020. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • ‘other’ freight (11,2% and contributing 2,2 percentage points); and
  • chemicals, coke, petroleum, rubber, plastic and other mineral products (13,1% and contributing 1,0 percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted payload decreased by 4,2% in the three months ended August 2021 compared with the previous three months. Road freight decreased by 5,0% (contributing -4,0 percentage points) and rail freight decreased by 1,1% (contributing -0,2 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys increased by 27,1% in August 2021 compared with August 2020. The corresponding income increased by 43,9% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 5,1% in the three months ended August 2021 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys decreased by 5,2% (contributing -4,7 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys decreased by 4,1% (contributing -0,4 of a percentage point).
