Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 1,0% in March 2021 compared with March 2020. The corresponding income increased by 2,6% over the same period.


Income from freight transportation decreased by 4,7% in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the first quarter of 2020The main negative contributors to this decrease were:

  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (-21,1% and contributing -2,4 percentage points); and
  • primary mining and quarrying products (-4,5% and contributing -1,6 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 0,2% in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the fourth quarter of 2020. Road freight increased by 2,3% (contributing 1,8 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 6,7% (contributing -1,5 percentage points).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 27,0% in March 2021 compared with March 2020. The corresponding income decreased by 10,4% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 8,3% in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the fourth quarter of 2020. Road passenger journeys decreased by 9,7% (contributing -9,1 percentage points) while rail passenger journeys increased by 12,3% (contributing 0,8 of a percentage point).
