Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 8,8% in August 2018 compared with August 2017. The corresponding income increased by 8,9% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 4,1% in the three months ended August 2018 compared with the three months ended August 2017. The main positive contributors to this increase were:

  • primary mining and quarrying products (7,0% and contributing 2,4 percentage points); and
  • 'other' freight (8,4% and contributing 1,0 percentage point).
     
    Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 1,7% in the three months ended August 2018 compared with the previous three months. Road freight increased by 3,8% (contributing 2,9 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 4,8% (contributing -1,1 percentage points).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys increased by 14,1% in August 2018 compared with August 2017. The corresponding income decreased by 1,9% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 7,2% in the three months ended August 2018 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys increased by 15,1% (contributing 7,7 percentage points) while rail passenger journeys decreased by 0,9% (contributing -0,4 of a percentage point).
