Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) decreased by 11,6% in 2020 compared with 2019 and the corresponding income decreased by 10,2% over the same period. In December 2020, the volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 4,6% year-on-year. The corresponding income decreased by 0,1% over the same period.


Income from freight transportation decreased by 4,1% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with the fourth quarter of 2019. The main negative contributors to this decrease were:

  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (-22,9% and contributing -2,7 percentage points); and
  • ‘other’ freight (-4,1% and contributing -0,8 of a percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 2,0% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. Road freight increased by 4,1% (contributing 3,1 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 4,5% (contributing -1,1 percentage points).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 50,3% in 2020 compared with 2019. The corresponding income decreased by 40,8% over the same period. In December 2020, the number of passenger journeys decreased by 36,2% year-on-year. The corresponding income decreased by 30,7% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 27,0% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. Road passenger journeys increased by 21,1% (contributing 20,6 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys increased by 292,7% (contributing 6,4 percentage points).
