Freight transportation


The volume of goods transported (payload) decreased by 4,6% in November 2020 compared with November 2019. The corresponding income decreased by 4,0% over the same period.


Income from freight transportation decreased by 5,9% in the three months ended November 2020 compared with the three months ended November 2019. The main negative contributors to this decrease were:

  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (-22,8% and contributing -2,6 percentage points); and
  • ‘other’ freight (-6,5% and contributing -1,2 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 3,8% in the three months ended November 2020 compared with the previous three months. Road freight increased by 5,9% (contributing 4,4 percentage points) while rail freight decreased by 2,7% (contributing -0,7 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 48,8% in November 2020 compared with November 2019. The corresponding income decreased by 40,9% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 27,7% in the three months ended November 2020 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys increased by 24,3% (contributing 23,8 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys increased by 202,9% (contributing 3,9 percentage points).
