Key findings: P7162 - Land transport survey, March 2020

The volume of goods transported (payload) decreased by 5,6% in March 2020 compared with March 2019. The corresponding income increased by 0,4% over the same period.


Income from freight transportation decreased by 1,7% in the first quarter of 2020 compared with the first quarter of 2019. The main negative contributors to this decrease were:

  • basic metals and fabricated metal products (-34,3% and contributing -1,2 percentage points); and
  • containers (-17,1% and contributing -1,0 percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 2,2% in the first quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. Road freight increased by 2,1% (contributing 1,6 percentage points) and rail freight increased by 2,9% (contributing 0,7 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation 

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 30,7% in March 2020 compared with March 2019. The corresponding income decreased by 9,6% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 15,7% in the first quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. Rail passenger journeys decreased by 38,2% (contributing -12,5 percentage points) and road passenger journeys decreased by 4,8% (contributing -3,2 percentage points).
