Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 1,1% in May 2018 compared with May 2017. The corresponding income increased by 4,1% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 6,4% in the three months ended May 2018 compared with the three months ended May 2017. The main contributor to this increase was primary mining and quarrying products (10,9% and contributing 3,8 percentage points).
 
Seasonally adjusted payload decreased by 0,5% in the three months ended May 2018 compared with the previous three months. Road freight decreased by 0,8% (contributing -0,6 percentage points) while rail freight increased by 0,5% (contributing 0,1 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 24,7% in May 2018 compared with May 2017. The corresponding income decreased by 18,7% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 12,2% in the three months ended May 2018 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys decreased by 17,4% (contributing -9,5 percentage points) while rail passenger journeys decreased by 5,9% (contributing -2,7 percentage points).
