Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 9,3% in 2017 compared to 2016. The corresponding income increased by 12,3% over the same period.

In December 2017 the volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 4,6% year-on-year. The corresponding income increased by 4,7% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 10,3% in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared with the fourth quarter of 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • primary mining and quarrying products (10,8% and contributing 3,8 percentage points);
  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (16,0% and contributing 2,4 percentage points);
  • chemicals, coke, petroleum, rubber, plastic and other mineral products (20,2% and contributing 1,7 percentage points); and
  • agriculture and forestry primary products (13,5% and contributing 1,0 percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 1,4% in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. Road freight increased by 1,8% (contributing 1,3 percentage points) while rail freight increased by 0,3% (contributing 0,1 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 8,8% in 2017 compared with 2016. The corresponding income decreased by 0,5% over the same period.

In December 2017 the number of passenger journeys decreased by 7,2% year-on-year. The corresponding income decreased by 1,1% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 0,3% in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. Road passenger journeys increased by 4,5% (contributing 2,3 percentage points) while rail passenger journeys decreased by 4,3% (contributing -2,0 percentage points).
