Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 6,8% in September 2017 compared with September 2016. The corresponding income increased by 11,7% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 11,6% in the third quarter of 2017 compared with the third quarter of 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • primary mining and quarrying products (11,4% and contributing 4,0 percentage points);
  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (25,6% and contributing 3,5 percentage points); and
  • agriculture an d forestry primary products (22,1% and contributing 1,7 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload decreased by 0,7% in the third quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. Rail freight decreased by 2,9% (contributing -0,7 of a percentage points) while road freight showed no growth.

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 14,6% in September 2017 compared with September 2016. The corresponding income decreased by 5,8% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 3,7% in the third quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. Rail passenger journeys decreased by 12,4% (contributing -6,5 percentage points), while road passenger journeys increased by 5,8% (contributing 2,8 percentage points).
