Key findings: P7162 - Land transport survey, August 2017


Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 7,6% in August 2017 compared with August 2017. The corresponding income increased by 9,5% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 13,2% in the three months ended August 2017 compared with the three months ended August 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • primary mining and quarrying products (14,1% and contributing 4,9 percentage points);
  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (26,5% and contributing 3,7 percentage points); and
  • agriculture an d forestry primary products (25,1% and contributing 1,9 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 2,9% in the three months ended August 2017 compared with the previous three months. Road freight grew by 4,4% (contributing 3,3 percentage points) while rail freight declined by 1,5% (contributing -0,4 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 4,2% in August 2017 compared with August 2016. The corresponding income showed no growth over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 4,5% in the three months ended August 2017 compared with the previous three months. Rail passenger journeys decreased by 11,5% (contributing -6,1 percentage points), while road passenger journeys increased by 3,5% (contributing 1,6 percentage points).
