Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 11,8% in June 2017 compared with June 2016. The corresponding income increased by 16,4% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 13,5% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with the second quarter of 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • primary mining and quarrying products (14,6% and contributing 5,4 percentage points); 
  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (28,6% and contributing 3,7 percentage points); and
  • agriculture an d forestry primary products (14,8% and contributing 1,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 6,2% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with the second quarter of 2016. Road freight grew by 7,6% (contributing 5,5 percentage points) while rail freight grew by 2,5% (contributing 0,7 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 13,3% in June 2017 compared with June 2016. The corresponding income decreased by 12,3% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 8,1% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. Road passenger journeys decreased by 10,4% (contributing -4,6 percentage points), while rail passenger journeys decreased by 6,3% (contributing -3,5 percentage points).
