Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 7,2% in April 2017 compared with April 2016. The corresponding income increased by 9,2% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 11,2% in the three months ended April 2017 compared with the three months ended April 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:
• primary mining and quarrying products (12,9% and contributing 4,7 percentage points);
• manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (28,2% and contributing 3,6 percentage points); and
• 'other' freight (15,5% and contributing 1,5 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 0,5% in the three months ended April 2017 compared with the three months ended April 2016. Rail freight grew by 0,2% (contributing 0,1 of a percentage point), while road freight decreased by 0,8% (contributing -0,6 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 11,2% in April 2017 compared with the previous three months. The corresponding income decreased by 13,0% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys decreased by 4,3% in the three months ended 2017 compared with the previous three months. Rail passenger journeys decreased by 2,3% (contributing -1,3 percentage points), while road passenger journeys decreased by 6,9% (contributing -3,0 percentage points).
