Key findings: P7162 - Land transport survey, February 2017

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 7,5% in  February 2017 compared with February 2016. The corresponding income increased by 11,6% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 14,6% in the three months ended February 2017 compared with the three months ended February 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:
primary mining and quarrying products (26,0% and contributing 8,8 percentage points); and
manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (33,3% and contributing 4,3 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 1,8% in the three months ended February 2017 compared with the three months ended November 2016. Rail freight grew by 4,1% (contributing 1,1 percentage points), while road freight grew by 0,9% (contributing 0,7 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 9,6% in February 2017 compared with February 2016. The corresponding income increased by 0,5% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 0,5% in the three months ended February 2017 compared with the three months ended November 2016. Rail passenger journeys decreased by 3,6% (contributing -2,1 percentage points), while road passenger journeys grew by 6,6% (contributing 2,7 of a percentage points).
