Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 2,2% in January 2013 compared with January 2012. The corresponding income increased by 8,1% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 7,6% in the three months ended January 2013 compared with the three months ended January 2012. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • primary mining and quarrying products (9,9% and contributing 3,2 percentage points);
  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (10,6% and contributing 1,6 percentage points); and
  • `other` freight (15,3% and contributing 1,4 percentage points).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys increased by 10,7% in January 2013 compared with January 2012. The corresponding income increased by 17,4% over the same period.
