Income from freight transportation

The income from freight transportation for the three months ended January 2012 increased by 17,7% compared with the three months ended January 2011. Income from freight transportation for January 2012 increased by 20,2% compared with January 2011, while the volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 12,6% over this period.

The year-on-year increase of 17,7% in income from freight transportation for the three months ended January 2012 was driven largely by:

  • primary mining and quarrying products (27,1% and contributing 8,6 percentage points);
  • manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (19,5% and contributing 2,9 percentage points); and
  • 'other' freight (22,4% and contributing 1,9 percentage points).

Income from passenger transportation

The income from passenger transportation for the three months ended January 2012 increased by 12,1% compared with the three months ended January 2011. Income from passenger transportation for January 2012 increased by 11,6% compared with January 2011, while the number of passengers increased by 8,0% over this period.

The main contributor to the year-on-year increase of 12,1% in income from passenger transportation for the three months ended January 2012 was road passenger transportation (12,5% and contributing 9,8 percentage points), followed by railway passenger transportation (10,6% and contributing 2,3 percentage points).
