Year-on-year percentage change in food and beverages income at constant 2015 prices by type of income

The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown regulations since 27 March have had an extensive impact on economic activity. Measured in real terms (constant 2015 prices), total income generated by the food and beverages industry decreased by 29,4% in March 2020 compared with March 2019. The largest decrease was recorded for bar sales (-40,4%).

In March 2020, the main contributors to the 29,4% year-on-year decrease were:

  • restaurants and coffee shops (-34,0% and contributing -18,7 percentage points); and
  • takeaway and fast-food outlets (-23,6% and contributing -7,2 percentage points).


Food and beverages income at constant 2015 prices for the latest three months by type of enterprise

Total income decreased by 9,1% in the first quarter of 2020 compared with the first quarter of 2019. The main contributors to this decrease were:

  • restaurants and coffee shops (-10,0% and contributing -5,4 percentage points); and
  • catering services (-14,7% and contributing -2,2 percentage points).

 

Seasonally adjusted food and beverages income decreased by 25,8% month-on-month in March 2020. The largest negative month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • restaurants and coffee shops (-31,2%); and
  • takeaway and fast-food outlets (-20,3%).
