Key findings: P6420 - Food and beverages, January 2009

Total income increases

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry for the three months ended January 2009 increased by 11,9% compared to the three months ended January 2008. This was mainly due to increases of 14,5% and 12,1% in income from food sales and other income respectively. These increases were to a certain extent counteracted by the decrease in income from bar sales (-7,4%). Total income for January 2009 increased by 6,7% compared to January 2008.

The 11,9% increase in total income for the three months ended January 2009 compared with the three months ended January 2008 was mainly due to increases reported by takeaway and fast-food outlets (23,6%), restaurants and coffee shops (10,5%) and caterers (6,9%). There was a decrease of 18,1% in other catering services.
