Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, January 2020

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 4,8% in January 2020 compared with January 2019.

 

Income from accommodation increased by 4,6% year-on-year in January 2020, the result of a 0,6% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 4,0% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

 

In January 2020, the types of accommodation that recorded positive year-on year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (22,0%);

  • ‘other’ accommodation (11,4%); and

  • hotels (4,0%).

 

The main contributors to the 4,6% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in January 2020 were:

  • ‘other’ accommodation (contributing 3,2 percentage points); and

  • hotels (contributing 2,7 percentage points).

 

Income from accommodation increased by 1,6% in the three months ended January 2020 compared with the three months ended January 2019. The positive contributors to this increase were:

  • ‘other’ accommodation (7,9% and contributing 2,2 percentage points); and

  • caravan parks and camping sites (17,1% and contributing 0,2 of a percentage point).

 

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 1,8% month-on-month in January 2020. Positive month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • caravans parks and camping sites (8,0%);

  • hotels (2,2%); and

  • ‘other’ accommodation (1,5%).
