Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, August 2018

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 5,3% in August 2018 compared with August 2017.

Income from accommodation increased by 2,8% year-on-year in August 2018, the result of a 1,7% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 4,6% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In August 2018, the types of accommodation that recorded the largest year-on year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • 'other' accommodation (14,7%); and
  • caravan parks and camping sites (13,5%).

The main contributor to the 2,8% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in August 2018 was 'other' accommodation (contributing 4,2 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 1,6% in the three months ended August 2018 compared with the three months ended August 2017. The main contributor to this increase was 'other' accommodation (10,8% and contributing 3,0 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 1,3% month-on-month in August 2018. The largest month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (9,5%); and
  • 'other' accommodation (3,4%) .
