Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, October 2019

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 1,4% in October 2019 compared with October 2018.

 

Income from accommodation increased by 1,9% year-on-year in October 2019, the result of a 3,5% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 5,6% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

 

‘Other’ accommodation increased by 17,8% (contributing 5,1 percentage points) year-on-year in October 2019. Hotels decreased by 2,6% (contributing -1,7 percentage points) and guest-houses and guest-farms decreased by 29,5% (contributing -1,4 percentage points) over the same period.

 

Income from accommodation increased by 4,6% in the three months ended October 2019 compared with the three months ended October 2018. The main contributor to this increase was ‘other’ accommodation (13,5% and contributing 4,0 percentage points).

 

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation decreased by 5,4% month-on-month in October 2019. Negative month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (-15,8%);

  • hotels (-7,7%); and

  • caravan parks and camping sites (-2,9%).
