Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, May 2019

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 4,0% in May 2019 compared with May 2018.

Income from accommodation increased by 4,8% year-on-year in May 2019, the result of a 1,3% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 6,3% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In May 2019, the types of accommodation that recorded the largest year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (44,6%);
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (12,1%); and
  • 'other' accommodation (9,3%).

The main contributors to the 4,8% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in May 2019 were:

  • 'other' accommodation (contributing 2,6 percentage points); and
  • hotels (contributing 1,2 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 3,7% in the three months ended May 2019 compared with the three months ended May 2018. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • 'other' accommodation (8,9% and contributing 2,5 percentage points); and
  • hotels (1,7% and contributing 1,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation was flat between April 2019 and May 2019. Caravan parks and camping sites grew by 43,7% while hotels declined by 2,6%.
