Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, January 2019

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry decreased by 3,7% in January 2019 compared with January 2018.

Income from accommodation decreased by 3,7% year-on-year in January 2019, the result of a 2,4% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 1,4% decrease in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In January 2019, the types of accommodation that recorded the largest negative year-on year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (-21,9%); and
  • caravan parks and camping sites (-16,5%).

The main contributors to the 3,7% year-on-year decrease in income from accommodation in January 2019 were:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (contributing -1,6 percentage points); and
  • 'other' accommodation (contributing -1,3 percentage points).

Income from accommodation decreased by 0,5% in the three months ended January 2019 compared with the three months ended January 2018. Guest-houses and guest-farms decreased by 20,8% (contributing -1,6 percentage points) while 'other' accommodation increased by 4,3% (contributing 1,2 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation decreased by 1,5% month-on-month in January 2019. Negative month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • 'other' accommodation (-3,9%); and
  • hotels (-1,2%).
