Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, December 2018

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry was flat in 2018 compared with 2017. Income from accommodation was also flat over the same period.

In December 2018 total income for the tourist accommodation industry decreased by 2,9% year-on-year.

Income from accommodation decreased by 1,1% year-on-year in December 2018, the result of a 2,5% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 1,4% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In December 2018, the types of accommodation that recorded negative year-on year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (-19,4%);
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (-12,2%); and
  • hotels (-4,2%).

The main negative contributor to the 1,1% year-on-year decrease in income from accommodation in December 2018 was hotels (contributing -2,6 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 0,9% in the fourth quarter of 2018 compared with the fourth quarter of 2017. The main contributor to this increase was 'other' accommodation (9,1% and contributing 2,4 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation decreased by 0,7% month-on-month in December 2018. Negative month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (-20,1%);
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (-5,9%); and
  • hotels (-2,1%).
