Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, October 2018


Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry showed no growth in October 2018 compared with October 2017.

Income from accommodation decreased by 0,2% year-on-year in October 2018, the result of a 1,6% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 1,4% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In October 2018, the types of accommodation that recorded negative year-on year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (-22,8% and contributing -1,8 percentage points); and
  • hotels (-1,7% and contributing -1,1 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 1,9% in the three months ended October 2018 compared with the three months ended October 2017. The main contributor to this increase was 'other' accommodation (11,3% and contributing 3,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation decreased by 2,0% month-on-month in October 2018. Negative month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • 'other' accommodation (-3,1%);
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (-1,7%); and
  • hotels (-1,6%).
