Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, September 2018

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 3,9% in September 2018 compared with September 2017.

Income from accommodation increased by 4,3% year-on-year in September 2018, the result of a 0,3% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 4,6% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In September 2018, the types of accommodation that recorded positive year-on year growth in income from accommodation were:

  •  'other' accommodation (12,2%);
  •  caravan parks and camping sites (6,8%); and
  •  hotels (3,0%).

The main contributors to the 4,3% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in September 2018 were:

  •  'other' accommodation (contributing 3,3 percentage points); and
  •  hotels (contributing 1,9 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 2,2% in the third quarter of 2018 compared with the third quarter of 2017. The main contributor to this increase was 'other' accommodation (11,0% and contributing 3,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 1,6% month-on-month in September 2018. The largest month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  •  guest-houses and guest-farms (18,7%); and
  •  caravan parks and camping sites (5,4%).
