Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, December 2020

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry decreased by 57,7% in December 2020 compared with December 2019.

 

Income from accommodation decreased by 51,5% year-on-year in December 2020, the result of a 41,2% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 17,5% decrease in the average income per stay unit night sold.

 

In December 2020, all accommodation types recorded large negative year-on-year growth in income from accommodation. The largest year-on-year decreases in income from accommodation were reported by:

  • hotels (-56,7% and contributing -35,7 percentage points); and

  • ‘other’ accommodation (-42,7% and contributing -13,3 percentage points).

 

Income from accommodation decreased by 61,1% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with the fourth quarter of 2019. The main contributors to this decrease were:

  • hotels (-65,0% and contributing -42,1 percentage points); and

  • ‘other’ accommodation (-55,4% and contributing -16,8 percentage points).

 

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 40,8% month-on-month in December 2020 and increased by 1,3% month-on-month in November.
