Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, January 2018

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 1,6% in January 2018 compared with January 2017.

Income from accommodation increased by 2,5% year-on-year in January 2018, the result of a 0,4% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 2,1% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In January 2018, the types of accommodation that recorded positive year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (61,3%);
  • 'other' accommodation (10,3%); and
  • hotels (0,6%).

The main contributor to the 2,5% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in January 2018 was 'other' accommodation (contributing 2,8 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 3,1% in the three months ended January 2018 compared with the three months ended January 2017. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • 'other' accommodation (6,6% and contributing 1,8 percentage points); and
  • hotels (1,4% and contributing 0,9 of a percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 1,8% month-on-month in January 2018. Positive month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • 'other' accommodation (8,6%);
  • caravan parks and camping sites (5,6%); and
  • hotels (0,2%).
