Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, December 2017

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 2,1% in 2017 compared with 2016. Income from accommodation increased by 4,6% over the same period.

In December 2017 total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 4,5% year-on-year.

Income from accommodation increased by 5,5% year-on-year in December 2017, the result of a 0,7% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 6,3% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In December 2017, the types of accommodation that recorded the largest year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (19,6%);
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (10,7%); and
  • 'other' accommodation (10,0%).

The main contributors to the 5,5% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in December 2017 were:

  • 'other' accommodation (contributing 2,6 percentage points);
  • hotels (contributing 1,6 percentage points); and
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (contributing 1,0 percentage point).

Income from accommodation increased by 2,7% in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared with the fourth quarter of 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • 'other' accommodation (4,4% and contributing 1,2 percentage points);
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (8,3% and contributing 0,7 of a percentage point); and
  • hotels (0,9% and contributing 0,6 of a percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 0,3% month-on-month in December 2017. Positive month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • guest-houses and guest farms (3,4%);
  • 'other' accommodation (0,5%); and
  • hotels (0,3%).
