Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, October 2017

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 1,2% in October 2017 compared with October 2016.

Income from accommodation increased by 2,9% year-on-year in October 2017, the result of a 3,7% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 6,9% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In October 2017, the types of accommodation that recorded the largest year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (14,8%); and
  •  'other' accommodation (5,5%).

The main contributors to the 2,9% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in October 2017 were:

  • 'other' accommodation (contributing 1,5 percentage points); and
  •  guest-houses and guest-farms (contributing 1,2 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 3,7% in the three months ended October 2017 compared with the three months ended October 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (19,2% and contributing 1,6 percentage points); and
  •  'other' accommodation (5,4% and contributing 1,5 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 1,6% month-on-month in October 2017. Positive month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (6,4%);
  • hotels (1,6%); and
  • 'other' accommodation (0,5%).
