Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, September 2017

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 1,8% in September 2017 compared with September 2016.

Income from accommodation increased by 3,8% year-on-year in September 2017, the result of a 1,5% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 5,4% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In September 2017, the types of accommodation that recorded the largest year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  •  caravan parks and camping sites (52,0%);
  •  guest-houses and guest-farms (10,3%); and
  •  'other' accommodation (9,8%.

The main contributors to the 3,8% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in September 2017 were:

  •  'other' accommodation (contributing 2,5 percentage points); and
  •  guest-houses and guest-farms (contributing 0,8 of a percentage point).

Income from accommodation increased by 4,4% in the third quarter of 2017 compared with the third quarter of 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

  •  'other' accommodation (7,3% and contributing 2,0 percentage points); and
  •  guest-houses and guest-farms (17,9% and contributing 1,4 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation decreased by 1,9% month-on-month in September 2017. Negative month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (-16,2%); and
  • hotels (-1,0%).
