Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, July 2017

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 2,9% in July 2017 compared with July 2016.

Income from accommodation increased by 4,9% year-on-year in July 2017, the result of a 1,4% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 6,4% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In July 2017, the types of accommodation that recorded the highest year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  •  caravan parks and camping sites (36,3%);
  •  'other' accommodation (8,8%); and
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (6,8%).

The main contributors to the 4,9% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in July 2017 were:

  • 'other' accommodation (contributing 2,4 percentage points); and
  • hotels (contributing 1,7 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 4,6% in the three months ended July 2017 compared with the three months ended July 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • hotels (3,8% and contributing 2,5 percentage points); and
  • 'other' accommodation (8,8% and contributing 2,3 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 3,4% month-on-month in July 2017. The largest month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (24,2%); and
  • caravan parks and camping sites (8,6%).
