Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, June 2017

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry decreased by 0,8% in June 2017 compared with June 2016.

Income from accommodation increased by 3,6% year-on-year in June 2017, the result of a 4,1% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and an 8,1% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In June 2017, the types of accommodation that recorded positive year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (21,8%);
  • 'other' accommodation (7,9%); and
  • hotels (2,6%).

The main contributors to the 3,6% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in June 2017 were:

  • 'other' accommodation (contributing 2,1 percentage points); and
  • hotels (contributing 1,7 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 6,7% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with the second quarter of 2016. The main contributors to this increase were 'other' accommodation (15,1% and contributing 4,0 percentage points) and hotels (3,7% and contributing 2,5 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation decreased by 2,5% month-on-month in June 2017. Negative month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • guest-houses and guest-farms (-13,5%); and
  • hotels (-3,5%).
